MORE than 100 people are expected to join the global Black Lives Matter movement when a peaceful vigil is held in Inverness this weekend.

Thousands of people worldwide have expressed concerns about racism following the death of African-American George Floyd in police custody in the United States last week.

Highlanders are being invited to gather in Bught Park at 1pm on Saturday for five minutes’ silence and to show solidarity with people who are living with racism.

Organiser Ben Anderson, from Inverness, urged people who go along to remember social distancing advice.

“Let’s show our support but not break the coronavirus guidelines,” he said.

“We need to shine a light on latent racism across the globe.

“More than 100 people have already said they will attend. The message is simple – Black Lives Matter in Inverness and across the world.”

Mr Floyd (46) suffered a cardiac arrest after being restrained by Minneapolis police.
