Pressure on Dundee clubs can leave door ajar for Caley Thistle

Ross Tokely believes Caley Thistle can capitalise on the burden of expectation sure to be weighing on Tayside shoulders in next season’s Championship title race.

The club legend, who made a record 589 appearances across four divisions in 16 years with Inverness, is convinced John Robertson’s side can mount a renewed challenge for promotion next season.

While relegated Dundee and play-off failures Dundee United will be generously funded by their respective American owners, Tokely is convinced they will also face crippling pressure to succeed.

United manager Robbie Neilson is likely to be given further scope to improve his squad after significant January spending.

The new man in the dugout at Dens Park, James McPake – potentially working alongside director of football Gordon Strachan – will also be investing heavily in new faces.

“It will be another interesting league with two Dundee sides in there next season,” Tokely said.

“Robbie Neilson basically brought in a brand new team last January.

“They’ll be spending the money again, as will Dundee, but Caley Thistle just need to do what they do best.

“They just need to build momentum and wins – and leave the pressure to Dundee and Dundee United."
