A couple whose work has taken them from Scotland to Jersey, Mallorca and Swansea are now running two Salvation Army centres in Cardiff.

Majors David and Elizabeth McCaw-Aldworth are the new officers at Cardiff Canton and the Cardiff East corps and community centre on Janet Street in Splott.

David is originally from Darlington in County Durham and Elizabeth – whose first language is Spanish, was born in Edinburgh but spent her childhood in Chile and Panama.

They have three children - one of whom is a student in Cardiff, and three grandchildren – Erin, Isla and Sara.

Self-confessed DYI fan David who says he has put in more kitchens than he cares to remember is also a film fan and enjoys science fiction and blockbuster movies. In her spare time, Elizabeth likes to decorate cakes.

David said: “Having already served as Salvation Army officers in Dundee, Jersey, Hamilton, Mallorca and Morriston we both now feel so much at home in Cardiff.

"It feels right to be here at this point in time and we are here when people need us with compassionate support and practical help. Everyone is welcome at The Salvation Army.”

Cardiff Canton Corps, which is on Cowbridge Road East, runs services including a parent and toddler group, a men’s fellowship group and a Cameo – ‘Come and meet each other’ group.

In Cardiff East, the services include the Employment Plus UK programme which helps jobseekers to work, a parent and toddler group and the Taste of Heaven café.

The Salvation Army’s halls in Ely and Grangetown also provide a range of services for the communities they serve.

The Salvation Army’s Homelessness Services Unit at Crichton House on Vale Road in Splott runs the Bus Project service for rough sleepers and people experiencing homelessness in the capital.

In Cardiff, The Salvation Army also operates its Northlands Lifehouse on North Road and the Tŷ Gobaith Lifehouse on Bute Street and is a partner with Cardiff City Council in the innovative Housing First Cardiff pilot project.
