The death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers has sparked demonstrations and protest nationwide. Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died May 25. Video, now seen by millions, shows Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin with his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, resulting in Floyd’s death.
There were protests across Iowa this past weekend. Many were peaceful, but violence broke out in a number of Iowa towns and cities. On this edition of River to River, Charity Nebbe speaks with IPR reporter Kate Payne and Davenport Alderman Patrick Peacock to gather an understanding of violence that erupted overnight in eastern Iowa.
State Representative Ako Abdul-Samad also joins the program to talk about protests in Des Moines and the central part of the state.
