DERRY'S mayor has urged the public to give money to frontline charities rather than street beggars.
SDLP councillor John Boyle was speaking after plans were outlined to tackle homelessness in the city.
He said the city’s Civic Forum dealt with a range of issues from alcohol and drugs to emotional wellbeing, suicide prevention and homelessness.
“I am always moved by the generosity of spirit shown by the people of this city. But I do want to urge some caution in giving out cash on the streets as this may be contributing to a wider problem of organised begging or a quick fix solution to fuel more serious problems,” he said.
By donating to organisations which offer frontline services the public could help provide longer-term solutions, Mr Boyle said.

Derry city centre manager Jim Roddy said a multi-agency group has been tasked with supporting and helping rough sleepers and those who find themselves begging.
“We are also aware of issues around street begging and we want to caution people about giving money that would be better directed to the frontline services who are dealing with this issue on a daily basis,” he said.
