A 21-YEAR-OLD arrested over a paramilitary-style attack on a teenage boy in Derry following the funeral of Caoimhin Cassidy last week has been released without charge.

The man was arrested in the Creggan area of the city on Thursday morning as part of an investigation into dissident republicans.

He was later released without charge.

The man was arrested days after a teenage boy was found lying on a grass verge at the junction of Holyhall Road and Creggan Road.

The boy had suffered puncture wounds to both of his shins and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The arrest came following searches in the Hollyhall Road area on Wednesday. Several items were seized during the searches and removed for forensic examination.

Caoimhin Cassidy (18) died when the stolen car he was travelling in caught fire after crashing in the Galliagh area of the city on June 1.

Following his funeral Mass on Friday June 7, several incidents were reported to police.

A silver car carrying masked youths was seen speeding several times around a roundabout outside St Mary's Church in the Creggan shortly after the funeral.

After the Mass, a group of young teenagers – many wearing white T-shirts with Mr Cassidy's name and photo – became involved in scuffles around Creggan and at Derry City Cemetery.

At around 5pm that day, the teenage boy was found injured.

In the early hours of the following day, several masked men smashed the windows of a house in Culdaff Gardens in the Creggan.
