Trumansburg High School volleyball head coach Angela McLennan, along with a couple other individual athletes and teams, will be recognized among the athletic lore of Lansing Central School when they are officially inducted into the Lansing Athletic Hall of Fame on Nov. 30.

McLennan, Kim Van Pelt, Caitlin Wright, the 1998 softball team and the 2007 boys bowling team make the class of 2019 inductees, which was announced by the Lansing Central School District on Oct. 23.

McLennan was a three-sport athlete when she attended Lansing High School, playing on the varsity swimming and diving, basketball and softball teams. As a swimmer, she competed and helped her squad secure five straight Section IV Class D championships while also earning five varsity letters. McLennan played two years on the basketball team, earning varsity letters in both of those years and helping the Bobcats win an Interscholastic Athletic Conference Small School championship in one of the years. She played catcher and shortstop for the softball team, achieving all-state honors at both positions. During her senior year, she helped the squad win the Section IV Class D championship. The team advanced all the way to the state regional finals before losing to Brocton High School.

As the Blue Raiders’ varsity skipper, McLennan has compiled roughly 250 wins. Her resume also includes 12 IAC division titles, four conference championships, three Section IV Class C titles and three state regional final appearances. She was also named the Ithaca Journal Female Coach of the Year in 2014.

“Outstanding softball career at Lansing, and went on to play at Ithaca College and now is an outstanding volleyball coach at Trumansburg with a tremendous record,” Geoff Wright, who is part of the hall of fame selection committee, said.

Van Pelt also played three sports at Lansing, earning four varsity letters in swimming and diving, four in track and field and two in basketball. She was a part of three IAC championship and state tournament qualifying swimming and diving teams, and was named a captain for her junior and senior years. Van Pelt was part of a basketball team that won consecutive divisional titles and two conference championships. She was also a four-time conference all-star in two different track and field events – the discus and the 400 meter relay. She competed at the state tournament three times in the discus, placing as high as second. She qualified for the national tournament during her sophomore year in the discus, where she finished in 11th place.

“Kim Van Pelt was a very good track and field discus thrower,” Geoff Wright said. “Her coach was her dad, who… built a cement pad for her to practice at home. She went on to Ithaca College, and she swam there and ran track as well.”

Caitlin Wright competed on Lansing’s indoor and outdoor track and field, cross country and swimming and diving teams, tallying a total of 15 varsity letters between all four squads. Wright was the Section IV champion in the 400 meter hurdles for four straight years. At the time when she graduated, she held school records in indoor 200 meter run and 400 meter hurdles, indoor and outdoor long jump and triple jump, and the pentathlon. She was also a member of the teams who held the school records in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays and the distance medley relay.

“Caitlin Wright was outstanding in track and field,” Geoff Wright, who has no relation to Caitlin, said. “Did a number of events. Still a record holder in Lansing. Went on to [Binghamton University] and held records there when she graduated.”

The 1998 softball team finished with a record of 22–2, winning the IAC championship with a 7th inning rally 8–4 over Spencer-Van Etten. The Bobcats made it to the Section IV title game where they defeated Seton Catholic 9–7 before ultimately losing in the regional tournament to Sandy Creek 3–1. The squad featured five conference all stars in Dixie Chaffee, Kate Crandall, Tami Swearingen, Billie Boles and Rachel Jackson. Crandall and Boles earned New York State All Star first team honors, and Swearingen earned third team honors. The team was led by head coach Cathy Haight and assistant coaches Adam Heck and Julie Wilcox.

The 2007 boys bowling team were IAC and Section IV Class C champions that year. The Bobcats placed sixth overall in the state championship tournament. The squad was comprised of six bowlers in Kyle Christopher, Jon LaRock, Daniel Baldini, Philip Kulis, Ricky Newton and Kevin Quigley. Doug Volbrecht was the team’s head coach and Billy LaRock was the assistant coach.
