A child died after being found unresponsive early Tuesday night in an apartment in the 8800 block of Old Kings Road, just south of Baymeadows Road, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Officers were called to the Shadow Bay complex about 9 p.m. in response to a report of an unresponsive juvenile within the home, Sgt. Doug Molina said. The child was rushed to a hospital and declared dead.

The sergeant was asked several questions about early reports that the child was an infant who drowned, but he would release no details other than saying foul play was not suspected as people were being interviewed.

"At this time we don't have a cause of death, so we will have to wait on the medical examiner," Molina said.

The Florida Department of Children and Families has been notified about the death.

This was the second case of a child death in Northeast Florida on Tuesday.

Franklin Parker, a 2-year-old boy, drowned in a retention pond near West Minnesota Avenue in Macclenny, according to the Baker County Sheriff's Office. The toddler was staying with his 18-year-old sister at a friend's apartment when he got out, the Sheriff's Office said. The child was found after a search by his sister and neighbors.
