A resident shot and killed a suspect around lunchtime Friday at his Westside home, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police and rescue units were called about 12:45 p.m. to Pilgrims Trace Drive where a man was dead on the road. About the same time, a resident called 911 from around the block on Dover Cliff Drive about shooting a criminal, Sgt. Steve Rudlaff said. He said they are not looking for any suspects and that it's being investigated that the man was killed in commission of a criminal act.

The man was apparently trying to break into the resident's home off Collins Road near Shindler Drive. Rudlaff said at this point it was the only home involved and there was no indication the two men knew each other.

He said the man killed was 30 to 40 years old. No names were released.
