Jacksonville police detained two people after a barrage of bullets wounded one of them in a gunfight between several people Saturday night in a Westside neighborhood.

At least 40 bullets were fired in the shootout between two groups about 7 p.m. in the 6000 block of Edgefield Drive near Park Street, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Police said two cars containing several people each parked at the opposite ends of Edgefield Drive about 100 yards apart from each other.

Several people got out of the vehicles and began shooting at each other before fleeing. One house was struck by a couple of bullets but nobody was injured, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said a short time later one person with a gunshot wound arrived at a local hospital. The wounded person was in fair condition, and considered a possible suspect. Detectives detained him and another occupant of the car, which police think was used in the shootout, the Sheriff's Office said.

Police were searching for other suspects as well as the second car in the shootout — possibly a black Dodge Durango.

"It was like something out of the wild west. Bang, bang, bang. …I heard a lot of gunshots and got away from the doors and windows," one woman, who declined to be identified Sunday morning, told the Times-Union. She wasn't injured, and neither her home nor car were damaged, she said.

The Sheriff's Office said because it was early in the investigation detectives didn't know how many people were involved or the motive.
