Despite efforts by residents to save him, Jacksonville police said a man died after being shot at a Westside apartment complex late Saturday.

The victim, about 25 to 35 years old, had multiple gunshot wounds when found next to the parking lot at Normandy Apartments, 8441 Helen Terrace, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Police went to the complex about 10:36 p.m. to investigate multiple calls reporting gunshots.

Arriving officers found several residents administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department personnel then took over and rushed the man to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The man was the 101st homicide victim so far this year in Jacksonville, Times-Union records show.

In comparison, there were 78 homicides last year at this time. The homicide category primarily encompasses murder cases but also covers deaths caused without criminal intent.

Sheriff's Office detectives were canvassing the apartment compex for potential witnesses and possible security camera video.

No arrests were reported Sunday.
