With an aim to bring quality changes in government schools, Gujarat Education Department has decided to honour the exceptionally performing teachers with the Pratibhashali Shikshak awards. The awards which are to be launched this year will be given to the teachers and the headteachers twice a year, during each semester. The Pratibhashali Shikshak award is in addition to the annual best teachers awards which are given to the teachers on the occasion of Teachers Day. It, however, must be noted that each teacher will receive this award only once during their service period.

Earlier, the Pratibhashali Vidyarthi Awards were given to 30, 878 students on the occasion of Teachers Day on September 5, 2019. The students who scored more than 75 percent in class 5, 6 and 7 were chosen for the Pratibhashali Vidyarthi award during the 2018-19 session.

The Principal Secretary of Education, Vinod Rao said that it is necessary for corrective action to be taken instead of punitive action which could help in motivating both teachers and students. Repeated positive pressure will help in achieving corrective actions. He also added that such a huge force of teachers and students is positive pressure which will bring in changes and not fear or punishment.

Rao also added that the positive pressure on the system includes identifying Shreshth Shikshak, Pratibhashali Vidyarthi, the ranking of schools based on maximum Pratibhashali Vidyarthi, naming the cluster with maximum Pratibhashali Vidyarthi, identifying the schools with 100 percent attendance and ranking them based on the results.

The teachers will be evaluated based on their teaching, co-curricular activities, innovative experiments, and social contribution. The teachers will be evaluated out of 100 marks from which 80 percent will be for the teacher’s attendance, student attendance, unit test results, Gunotsav school accreditation results, semester tests, and annual test results. The remaining 20 percent will be for any other special social or educational work done in five years which includes articles in national and international publications, annual evaluation, school activities and trainings.
