The defender has made a whopping total of zero league appearances for the club

Coventry City defender Jak Hickman has apologised after footage of him drunkenly criticising supporters while on holiday with teammates went viral online.

The 20-year-old defender, who is yet to make a league start for the club and made 11 appearances last season during loan spells with Ashton United and Hereford, recorded himself on Snapchat surrounded by a number of his teammates, including midfielder Tom Bayliss.

Throughout the duration of the video – which is over two minutes long – Hickman can be heard stating that he will leave the club during the summer, as well as boasting about the weight of his pockets; a reference to his earnings.

Hickman can also be heard criticising supporters of a club which has experienced years of distress regarding its owners and its stadium, to the point that Coventry were facing the prospect of going out of business before securing an agreement to groundshare Birmingham City’s St. Andrew’s stadium next season.

After being subject to an enormous amount of criticism and derision, Hickman took to Twitter to apologise to supporters.

“Just want to speak on the video what people seen yesterday,” he wrote.

“It’s disgraceful on my behalf saying them words, and I’m so disappointed in myself. I’m not going to try and condone what I said because it’s just not on.

“I have nothing but love for Coventry City Football Club. I know a lot of people have had their opinion on what they saw and I cannot blame them. I’m on holiday with friends and had a drink, but that is not an excuse for what I said.

“All I can say is sorry and try to prove myself to you on the pitch where it matters if I get the chance.

“I and anyone else I mentioned are not leaving the club, just to clear that up. They were drunken words which were not acceptable and I didn’t want anything I said to be seen.

“People who know me personally know what I’m like and will laugh, but if you don’t I can’t blame you for thinking I’m an idiot.

“But it’s happened, now all I can do personally now is try to put it right.”

Hickman then followed that statement up with another, in a tweet on Friday morning.

“Secondly just want to say, as fans of the club you lot shouldn’t have to see someone giving it the big one like that, thinking I’m something special when I’m far from it, and very different to that if you know me personally. I’m just upset with myself right now,” he added.
