A NEW community market is set to take place in Thurso this Saturday.

Among the many goods and crafts on offer from stallholders at the Royal British Legion will be crochet, jewellery, wood carvings, cards, books, soaps, candles, cakes, goat cheese and chocolates.

One of the organisers of the Thurso Community Market, Hazel Dunbar (33), of Castletown, explained that previously a group of stallholders had taken part in RNLI craft fairs. However, they discovered that these events were no longer going to be staged in the town.

She said: “We decided to do something for us which would provide a portal into the community.”

Mrs Dunbar, of Hazely Wazely’s Books, is an independent organiser for Usborne children's books. Joining her on the administration team behind the new venture are Susan Asher of Meraki and Me, Toni Donaldson from Donaldson’s Designs and Carrie Campbell, Body Shop @ Home.

The organisers want the markets to become a monthly event and involve the wider community, giving other groups and charities a place to raise funds for themselves.

It is important for us to give something back to the community

Money left over from running the first event will go to the National Autism Society, a charity that Mrs Dunbar has already been fundraising for. “It is important for us to give something back to the community,” she said.

Each month any money left over from the table hires will go to a different charity, with stallholders nominating groups and the chosen one being drawn on the day.

This Saturday's event runs from 11am-3.30pm. Refreshments will be provided by Home-Start Caithness, with other charities given the chance to raise funds by doing the teas and coffees at future markets.

Caithness Archers will be running a come-and-try session.

The first market is fully booked with next month’s event, to be staged on June 15, already advertising limited available spaces. More markets will be held throughout the year, with the Christmas one also fully booked.
