CAITHNESS veterans responded to a call to arms on Saturday and went over the Ord to do battle on the Sutherland moors near Melvich.

The only casualties of the “battle” were in fact numerous orange discs – the clay pigeons that the Caithness branch of the Queen’s Own Highlanders Association blew out of the Sutherland skyline during a shoot at the Armadale Gun Club.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, Ross Hambleton said: “We’re having this special day to let everyone from the veterans community know that we’re here and very much active. We’re also inclusive to all veterans from any regiment and any branch of the forces.”

The association has recently worked on raising its profile and increased its membership from a mere three to 31, with 12 applications pending.

“We have several events planned for 2019 and we want to reach out to other veterans to come and join with us.”
