MARTINSBURG — The Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport Authority announced Wednesday morning its Vice Chairman Dennis “Denny” Barron has died.
Barron, 68, of Martinsburg, brother of Marva Barron, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, according to a release shared by the Authority.
According to Barron's obituary in Tuesday's edition of The Journal, "His passion in life was the Civil Air Patrol, a 50-plus year member. While in the C.A.P. he achieved the rank of Colonel. He was former Commander of the Martinsburg Composite Squadron, former Commander of the WV Wing, former Vice Commander of Mid-Atlantic Region, and at his time of death Director of Cadet Programs for the WV Wing."
According to the release, Barron was appreciated by many for his reliable contributions to the airport authority and the passion he showed about the potential of the airport.
The experience and the depth of knowledge he contributed to the airport team won't easily be replaced, the release said.
“Denny took a sincere interest in young people and in issues affecting our airport,” Neil Doran, airport manager, said. “He worked hard to advance the mission of the airport authority, was a tireless advocate for our staff. Mr. Barron was one that we could count on to make himself available to assist in anyway that he could. When he made a commitment to do something — he came through and was reliable. Denny was detail-oriented, experienced, thoughtful and hard working. He will be missed.”
The press release went on to say Barron devoted himself to the advancement and improvement of Civil Air Patrol Squadrons locally in Martinsburg and also across the state, recently serving as Interim West Virginia Wing Commander.
“Barron’s leadership is responsible for hundreds of kids going on to serve in the US Air Force and responsible for countless number of children’s love of flying over the decades of his involvement,” the release said.
Among his accomplishments, Barron gave more than 25 years of service to the local Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation board, serving as board President for several terms.
“Denny was tireless in his contributions to the airport, but even more to his family and friends,” John Laub, Chairman of the EWVRAA, said. “I knew Denny mostly from working with him at the airport and always found him to be honest, frank, and reliable. It was easy to sense his selflessness and desire to contribute his efforts for the benefit of others. He’s going to be missed.”
He is survived by sister, Marva B. Barron; foster son, Calvin (Pete) Peterson and wife, Julie-Anne and son Rory; very special friends, Shelton and Cosby Davis, and a host of cousins and friends.
Col. Barron’s Celebration of Life Service will be held at the following location: Saturday at 11 a.m. at The Airborne Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Denny's name to the Good Samaritan Free Clinic, 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg, WV 25401 or to the charity of one's choice.
