Who's the most famous person from every Wisconsin town? Takeaways from The Pudding's 'People Map of the US'

JR Radcliffe
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Pudding website published "A People Map of the US," updated May 31, "where city names are paired with the most Wikipedia'ed resident: people born in, lived in, or connected to a place."

That creates some natural gray areas: for example, noted Hawaiian Jason Momoa is listed as the big celebrity of Des Moines, Iowa, since his family moved there at one point. It's also oddly specific at other points: Aaron Rodgers is the biggest name associated with Suamico (The Green Bay suburb where he lives) instead of Green Bay, which belongs to actor Tony Shalhoub.

Here are some of the most fascinating takeaways from the map.

We've definitely got a fascination with murderers

Jeffrey Dahmer in court.

Perhaps it comes as no surprise that Jeffrey Dahmer gets the nod as Milwaukee's most-searched citizen. Ed Gein, the infamous Butcher of Plainfield, is Plainfield's pick. But the off-putting trail of celebrity doesn't stop there.

Brendan Dassey, convicted of Theresa Halbach's murder along with Steven Avery (a case that became a national story thanks to the Netflix "Making a Murderer" documentary) is listed as the selection for both Crivitz and Two Rivers. Cedarburg's pick is Jesse Anderson, who killed his wife in a restaurant parking lot (and was killed in prison with Dahmer as part of a double-homicide by another inmate).

Which Watt gets to claim Pewaukee?

JJ Watt served as the grand marshal of the 2019 Daytona 500. The Pewaukee High School graduate is the first NFL player to receive the honor.

NFL superstar J.J. Watt is listed as Waukesha's big name, though anyone from Lake Country knows that while Watt is a native of Waukesha County, he grew up and played high-school football in Pewaukee. So who is Pewaukee's pick? That would be J.J.'s younger brother, T.J., also in the NFL. Hmm.

Sports are all over this list, and in a number of capacities. Just to name a few, you see Adrija Novakovich (a U.S. soccer player from Muskego), John Navarre (a former University of Michigan quarterback from Cudahy), Ben Askren (an MMA fighter from Hartland), Tony Romo (former Cowboys quarterback and acclaimed TV broadcaster from Burlington) and Danica Patrick (famous Indy car racer born in Beloit and one of several auto racers you'll find on this map).

Other sports names you'll see: basketball player Mike Dunleavy Jr. of Mequon (really? How long was he there?), hockey star Gary Suter of Minocqua (where he lived post-playing career), baseball Hall of Famer Addie Joss of Rubicon, pro wrestler Ric Flair of Beaver Dam, football legend Dave Casper of Chilton, Brewers favorite Jim Gantner of Eden and NBA star Sam Dekker of Sheboygan.

Colin Kaepernick ... from Fond du Lac?

Former Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick caused some controversy with his decision to not stand for the national anthem.

Kaepernick is slightly associated with Milwaukee (where he was born) and obviously associated with his many years in California, but he did live in Fondy until age 4, so he gets dibs there. Sorry, Travis Diener.

He's not the only surprise in this regard. Neil Gaiman, a British fiction author behind "American Gods" and "Coraline" lives in Menomonie today and thus gets mentioned. Disgraced politician Joseph McCarthy was born in the Fox Valley and attended Marquette University, but he briefly practiced law in Shawano, which is where you'll find him here. Current governor Tony Evers gets mentioned twice, for Plymouth (where he was born) and Tomah (where he began his career in education).

Let's randomly spotlight five people you may have never heard of

A soldier says goodbye to his sweetheart at the Greyhound bus station in Indianapolis during World War II (Sept. 1943). Farm Security Administration (FSA) photo by Esther Bubley. Reproduced from the collections of the Library of Congress,

Evan Lewis (Ridgeway): An American pro wreslter who was the first recognized American Heavyweight Champion and credited with perfecting the "stranglehold."

Alonzo Cushing (Delafield): An artillery officer in the Union Army in the American Civil War who died at Gettysburg.

Minnesota may have Prince, but we also have one-named celebrities!

Liberace greeted fans Saturday outside the Liberace Playhouse at the Veterans Administration Center. Liberace

It should come as no surprise that piano prodigy Liberace is the pick for West Allis. But he's not the only mononymous person on the map. Pro wrestler Hornswoggle (Oshkosh), tribal leader and actor Apesanahkwat (Keshena) and cabaret singer Hildegard (New Holstein) are also on the list, as is Wisconsin Rapids rapper, singer and producer Jidenna.

Who gets the nod in the other big cities?

Chris Farley

We already told you Dahmer is Milwaukee's pick and Shalhoub is Green Bay's, plus J.J. Watt in Waukesha and Hornswoggle in Oshkosh. Who else gets credited from the state's biggest cities?

Madison: Comedian Chris Farley, who became a national name on Saturday Night Live and fashioned a movie career before his untimely death in 1997 at 33 years old.

Kenosha: Actor Mark Ruffalo, whose credits include a turn as Hulk in the recently concluded "Avengers" series of movies. He spent his teenage years in Virginia.

Racine: Ellen Corby, the actress who played Esther "Grandma" Walton on "The Waltons" (for which she won three Emmy Awards). She grew up in Philadelphia but was born in Racine.

Appleton: Willem Dafoe, a four-time Oscar nominee perhaps best known for his role as the Green Goblin in "Spider-Man" but most recently as an Best Supporting Actor frontrunner for "The Florida Project" in 2017 (he didn't win).

Eau Claire: Justin Vernon, a songwriter and singer who is far better known as the indie folk star of Bon Iver.

Janesville: Paul Ryan, the 54th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives until he stepped aside in January. The longtime politician was a vice-presidential candidate alongside Mitt Romney.
