Steve Jagler, a fixture in Milwaukee financial journalism for more than two decades, has resigned as Milwaukee Journal Sentinel business editor to become corporate communications director of the engineering, planning and design firm Graef.

Jagler joined the Journal Sentinel in 2015 after 13 years leading BizTimes Milwaukee. He previously had been managing editor of the Milwaukee Business Journal.

During his time as Journal Sentinel business editor, Jagler wrote a weekly column focused on executive leadership. The column, C-Level, typically included interviews with chief executives from Wisconsin companies.

"It has been a distinct honor and privilege to be the business editor and columnist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel,” Jagler said. “Working with this team of reporters has been the apex of my journalism career. I wish them all the best. And I am looking forward to some exciting new challenges and opportunities in the next chapter of my life."

In March, the Journal Sentinel won the top honor — general excellence — among publications its size in the annual “Best in Business” national competition held by the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing in Washington, D.C.

Jagler has won regional and national awards as an editor, reporter, columnist and blogger.

Prior to joining the Journal Sentinel, Jagler served as executive editor and columnist at BizTimes Milwaukee from 2002 to 2015.

Jagler is a past president of the Milwaukee Press Club and has served on the board of directors for both the Milwaukee Press Club and the Alliance of Area Business Publications.

"When Steve Jagler was first considering coming to the Journal Sentinel, somebody pointed out to me that he had the best Rolodex in town," said Chuck Melvin, the Journal Sentinel's assistant managing editor for business. "I knew exactly what they meant: Steve knows just about everyone in the Milwaukee business community, and when he calls, they answer.

"That speaks volumes about Steve. He will always be our friend, but this newsroom will miss him — and we wish him only the best."

Graef is a Milwaukee-based national engineering, planning and design firm. Graef recently announced it will relocate its national headquarters to become the signature office tenant at The Avenue, which is the reincarnation of the former Shops of Grand Avenue in downtown Milwaukee.

At Graef, Jagler will report to Pat Kressin, principal of the firm.

“Steve is a real pro. His knowledge and skill as a writer and editor, together with his relationships in Milwaukee and nationally, will allow us to tell people what we do and who we are in all the communities we serve,” Kressin said.
