Looking for black-owned businesses around Milwaukee? Here are more than 50 restaurants and shops in the metro area
As Black Lives Matter protests continue around the country, people are being called on to support the black community. Visiting a black-owned business is one way to do so.
MKE Black, a website and Android app (with plans to be available on Apple), lists black-owned businesses. The list was started in October by Milwaukeeans Paul Wellington and Rick Banks.
"We saw this void in Milwaukee where people want to support black business, but there's not a flag or a sign in the window to tell them," Banks said. "We thought to fill that need so that people could on-the-go see what the closest black-owned business is."

Banks said the website has seen a substantial increase of page views in the last few days.
"I think that a lot of people are looking for ways to support the black community," he said. "It's definitely blowing up. I was really happy to see that."
With the help of MKE Black and Milwaukee Black Restaurant Week, here is a list of black-owned businesses in Milwaukee.
Dining
The restaurant industry has been one of the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Black-owned restaurants are primarily located in Milwaukee, which still has not allowed dining rooms to reopen.
Some small business owners have also been affected by protesters blocking access to their business and in some cases, property has been damaged or looted during unrest.
Donald Lee, owner of Big Daddy’s BBQ and Soul Fool at 2005 N. 32nd St. and 2215 W. Hampton Ave., said protesters haven't affected his business at all.
"We just have to weather the storm," Lee said, referencing the coronavirus.
His business is open Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. More information is available by vising their Facebook page or by calling 414-758-8602.
Call ahead to these restaurants to order for takeout while Milwaukee remains closed.

Shopping
The Bronzeville Collective, 339 W. North Ave., has remained close due to concerns over coronavirus, but does have an online store and is working to reopen in mid-June.
Owner Lilo Allen said she has seen a small uptick in donations supporting the store since protests began.
"Since we haven't been able to open we do encourage people to make donations...and outside of that folks are being very intentional about shopping with us for their masks and their wellness items," Allen said. "We know this community supports us and with the uprising I think our space will be safe."
The Bronzeville Collective has 25 black vendors under its umbrella. People can order at bronzevillecollective.com. Items ordered are available for pickup Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.
