May 19, 2019: Seth Coppens, an eighth grader at the Juneau Montessori School, has artistic flair. On this day, aboard an Allen Marine boat, he wore simple and livable clothes: a forest green fleece pullover and gray sweat pants by Dip, mandatory Grundens boots and a Mountain Hardwear backpack. What also caught my eye was his great undercut hair style, which he created, and his genuine smile. Seth is also an accomplished playwright — his original play, “Sockeye,” was performed in Juneau earlier in May.

April showers bring May flowers and a perfect time to wear spring dresses. Lily Fredricks, owner of “The Rose” in Auke Bay, pairs an A-line, short sleeve black dress with hearts and flowers from Freeway Apparel with black leggings, ankle boots from Rock Dog and pink sunglasses from The Gap. Her 3-year-old daughter Lilah wears a vintage blue velvet dress with white lace and hot pink suede clogs by Sanita.

April 28, 2019: Caro Schultheis, a Juneau-Gastineau Rotary Club exchange student, hails from Buenos Aires, Argentina. She brings a trendy and fashionable style to Juneau with her. This day she wore a red off-the-shoulder crop top from Ona Saez, high-rise skinny jeans from Forever 21, a white faux leather belt and bold, black leather lace-up boots. Her finishing touch — streaks in her hair courtesy of Arctic Fox, purple rain.

April 21, 2019: Even on a field work day, Nicole Legere and Dylan Krull, Habitat Biologists with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game manage to look sharp and well-dressed for the task. This day they were electrofishing a small tributary to Auke Lake looking for coho salmon. Both are wearing waders and boots by Simms and ADF&G logo jackets from Drift Creek Outdoors. Their most important accessory: a Smith Root LR-24 backpack electrofisher. They found coho!

April 14, 2019: The Alaska Folk Festival has a style all its own as does Callie Conerton. Callie first appeared on stage at this annual event when she was 2 years old and has played on stage there many times since. This day she wore a colorful empire waist dress from LuLaRoe, a black jacket from Prairie Grass, and black leather boots from Bos. & Co. Her essential accessories include her red glasses, red and gold beaded hoop earrings that her mom Maureen Conerton got while traveling, and an A LoPrinzi guitar that belongs to her dad Jeff Brown, which has been played in every Folk Fest since 1975.

April 7, 2019: I ran into Finn Morley at an informal gathering as the Fairweather ferry departed Juneau. Finn, a 10th grader at Juneau-Douglas High School, played the “Alaska Flag Song” for the occasion. He dressed for the event in a dark gray suit jacket by Asos, burgundy button-down shirt by Express, pants by Kraft and maroon shoes by Saucony. The cello, which he played exquisitely, is from Jay Haide. He has played since the fourth grade after he got acquainted with the instrument in Ecuador.

March 31, 2019: Everyone enjoys a walk on a sunny day, and Michelle Cabrera and her daughter Ariana do so in style. Michelle is wearing an Anne Klein cardigan over a Banana Republic top and Style & Co jeans, with black leather Vince Camuto boots. Ariana couldn’t be cuter in her outfit from Juicy Couture topped by a black leather jacket.

March 24, 2019: There’s just something about a guy in a uniform, and Cheyenne Sanchez and Ed Quinto both wear theirs well. Cheyenne is sporting a Capital City Fire and Rescue’s “Class C” or normal daily duty uniform — a navy T-shirt and navy pants. Ed is wearing the “Class B” uniform — a white shirt with his Assistant Fire Chief Badge and black pants. A white shirt signifies a chief officer or fire marshal. Zippered boots are a must so they can quickly get into gear to respond to a call. Thanks for your service guys — you both look great!

March 17, 2019: Brian Weed, a seasoned outdoor adventurer and founding member of Juneau’s Hidden History group, is a colorful character! He knows that bright colors are an important safety consideration when out exploring remote areas around Juneau. Brian wears orange North Face softshell pants, chartreuse Carhartt long-sleeve shirt, orange Underground Explorer T-shirt, red Arc’Teryx backpack, Sly Fox hat, Lowa boots, Kahtoola microspikes and climbing gear. Kat — his dog — wears her equally colorful Super Girl cape and Rex Specs polarized dog goggles.

March 10, 2019: I met 11-year-old Joel Price one evening at The Pipeline skate park. Joel has a great attitude and demonstrates that a single piece of clothing can define a certain look. His faux black leather jacket with silver studs was the definite focal point of his outfit. Add in a black felt fedora, black T-shirt, Hollister button-fly jeans and canvas tennis shoes to complete the look.

March 3, 2019: On the steps of the Capitol, Tom Atkinson, legislative staffer, cuts a fine form in his slim-cut wool suit from Trend Maxman. His suit coordinates impeccably with his cotton paisley shirt by Nordstrom, Italian silk neck tie from Andrew’s Ties and Brunomagli shoes, also made it Italy. (Kerry Howard | For the Juneau Empire)

Feb. 24, 2019: Remember the old slogan, “Double your pleasure, double your fun?” Well it doesn’t get much cuter or more fun than identical twins Elise and Claire Beason, spotted at Rotary Park in their coordinated and oh so hip outfits! For this outing, the girls sported matching colors in their wool pants from Wild Coconut, fleece jackets and vests from Patagonia, boots from Bogs, and locally knit hats from WWKnits. Warm, wide-eyed and adorable!

Feb. 17, 2019: Amy Paige knows that vintage fashion is always in style! For a recent night on the town, at a fundraising event for Juneau Animal Rescue, she wore “the perfect red dress” — a bright 1950s style swing dress with crinoline slips underneath. Simply add black fishnet stockings and heels from Shoefly, and red lipstick, and she was good to go!

Feb. 10, 2019: No matter what the weather, dogs always need to be walked. You might as well do it in style! On this foggy day, Alicia Harris chose classic standards for her outing with her dogs Cooper and Diamond: a black and white striped J.Crew sweater, Levi’s jeans, Converse sneakers and a black Marmot vest for warmth. And, regardless of her outfit or the occasion, Alicia always wears her signature string of pearls.

Feb. 3, 2019: With style beyond her years, 6½-year-old Taraivini Verebasage is a standout. She picks out her own outfits, which are always guaranteed to be colorful and eclectic. This day she chose a sweater featuring a large rabbit and sequins, worn over a pink shirt and gray leggings. For accessories she selected an orange straw hat, sunglasses and pink snow boots. Keep it up Taravini — your style is one of a kind!

Jan. 27, 2019: On a snowy morning near the Mendenhall River, Taylor Baker was a definite bright spot. Her gold blouse from H&M, distressed jeans from Apricot Lane and black trench coat from Be Cool LA really stood out against the otherwise white landscape. I also loved the navy low-cut Xtratufs that she borrowed from her boyfriend Andy — practical and attractive!

Jan. 20, 2019: Style has no age limit as Les Spickler proves. During a recent lunch at McGivney’s, this great-grandfather was dressed casually but stylishly. He wore a classic Pendleton wool shirt and Dockers khaki cargo pants, topped by a Waterproof bomber jacket. Comfortable, practical, and good-looking.

Jan. 13, 2019: Neither rain, nor sleet, nor Taku winds can keep these longtime friends and walking buddies from an outing. Even on the worst weather days, they manage to look great. Sandy’s outfit includes a London Fog coat and Dockers pants, accessorized with Merrell shoes and a multi-colored Smartwool scarf and gloves. Mary Lou sports a Patagonia jacket, NYDJ pants, Bandolino boots, with a scarf from JJill and purse by Kate Spade.

Fang Sukkamol wore an Under Armour long-sleeve black shirt and North Face multi-colored running shorts. Dec. 30, 2018: Out on the town for dinner and a movie, Brad Chauvin caught my eye at “The Four Plates” Peruvian restaurant. His flannel shirt from L.L. Bean, burnt sienna pants from Prana and Vasque hiking boots were casual and coordinated. A vintage paisley silk scarf added just the right amount of color and style to his relaxed look.

Dec. 23, 2018: Tis the season to enjoy the holidays in style. As part of an annual decorating tradition, Santa’s helper Mary Siroky recently assisted in hanging holiday lights at the Gitkov dock in Auke Bay. Her stylish outfit includes a requisite Santa’s hat, red jacket, red scarf and black pants and boots. And although her clothes were not tarnished with ashes or soot, she was wearing her requisite OSHA safety belt as she was hoisted into the air.

Dec. 9, 2018: On this gray December day, it sure didn’t look much like winter. But that didn’t stop Mark Miller from getting into the holiday spirit on a hike with friends above the tram. Mandatory wardrobe for the mountain was his insulated jacket from Spyder, pants from Slates, and hiking boots from Le Chameau. His fleece neck gaiter, crimson chenille scarf and Santa’s hat brought color to the day and made everyone smile.

Dec. 2, 2018: There’s nothing better than a sunny day in November. Bonny Millard makes the most of it by taking a walk near Amalga Harbor. She dressed stylish and warm in a jacket from Taku Fisheries, black leggings from Athleta, multi-colored leg warmers, a red scarf and brown suede boots. Her best accessory? Her 13-year-old rescue dog McKenzie, who goes perfectly with everything she wears.

Nov. 25, 2018: Here’s a big “thanks” to all the working people in Juneau who help make our community a wonderful place to live. On this day, I ran into Eric Daugherty selling Dungeness crab off the F/V Americanus. Fishing is all about being practical, but I thought Eric also looked ruggedly handsome in his navy Taku Fisheries sweatshirt, jeans and Xtratufs.

Nov. 18, 2018: On a dark and gray Friday in November, Nanci Chisholm was a definite bright spot. On her feet all day at work, she knows how to dress for both comfort and style. This day she wore Black Pixie ankle pants from Old Navy, an Ann Taylor multi-color empire waist blouse, a black shrug from The Dress Barn and Clark’s wedge sandals, which she says are comfortable inside year-round.

Nov. 11, 2018: Even if it is dreary and gray outside, autumn fashion can still shine indoors. Linda Dahl is a perfect example. She combines fitted jean style leggings with a cozy black wool sweater from Charter Club. Her accessories include colorful knee socks, Croft & Barrow sandals, a vibrant turquoise necklace and earrings from Arizona, and her ever-present smile.

Nov. 4, 2018: This woman reminded me that a spot of color can brighten the grayest of November days. The autumn colors of her dress and scarf — plum, crimson and citron — caught my eye, and her knee-high leather boots suited her outfit perfectly. I also loved the umbrella. Umbrellas are often overlooked in favor of a rain jacket, but they can really save the day, especially in a wet climate.

Oct. 28, 2018: “Wilson” the skeleton knows that it is important to dress up for the holidays, but he believes in a minimalist approach to fashion. For his Halloween costume this year, he chose a black-and-white striped bandana, coordinated black eye patch and around his waist, a colorful red sash. Other than his peg leg and hand hook, the only accessory he needs is his parrot riding on his shoulder. Happy Halloween!

Oct. 21, 2018: Dirk Younkerman loves Alaska and has regularly visited and seasonally worked here since 1993. I ran into him on the trail on a rainy day where he was out enjoying the temperate rainforest. His practical clothes also looked smart—a royal blue Columbia fleece shirt, Kathmandu rain pants from New Zealand, Xtratufs, merino wool neck scarf and buff. An avid videographer, his most important accessories are his video camera and his ever-present smile, which reveals how much he enjoys Juneau.
