High school students plan gun safety rally

Rep. Hannan reported to speak.

A student group will be advocating for gun safety on the steps of the Capitol tonight.

Sidra Gregoire, one of the local representatives for Students Demand Action, said the 30-minute vigil starting at 4:30 p.m. will “honor the Parkland students and other victims of gun violence, and to let our (legislators) know we are still here and care about these issues.” Students Demand Action is an initiative of the national gun-control nonprofit “Everytown for Gun Safety.”

Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people.

Gregoire said Rep. Sara Hannan, D-Juneau, will be one of the speakers at the event.

Juneau-Douglas and Yaakoosge Daakahidi high schools took action in the month following the shooting. Yaakoosge Daakahidi students held a 17-minute vigil to honor the 17 victims a little over a week after the incident. YDHS then joined JDHS on a march to the capitol steps for a rally on the one-month anniversary of the shooting.
