Minneapolis lays down backyard fire laws

Want to be a good neighbor this summer? Make sure you follow your city's laws for having a backyard fire.

MINNEAPOLIS — Warmer weather means you can start having backyard fires again! 

But the city of Minneapolis wants you to know what rules you should be following in order to be safe. 

If you do not follow these laws, you could be fined over $200.

TIME

Minneapolis allows backyard fires between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.

SIZE

Your backyard fire should not be bigger than 3 feet wide and 2 feet high.

POLLUTION

Don't plan to have a fire when the city is under an air pollution advisory

MATERIALS

Burning cardboard boxes, trash and debris will make your fire toxic to others. 

DISTANCE

Keep your backyard fire at least 25 feet away from your house, garage or other combustible materials. 

CONTAINER

Your backyard fire must be in a ring or pit that is more than six inches high. 

SAFETY

Keep a water hose or fire extinguisher on hand when having a fire. 

WEATHER 

Don't plan to have a fire when the wind is at 10 mph. 

ATTENDANT 

Make sure an adult is watching the fire until it is completely out.
