SALINE COUNTY, Ark. — A student at East End Intermediate was hit by a car when he ran into the road trying to catch the school bus Tuesday morning.

The 8-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

“My heart sank whenever I got the phone call,” said Ashley Vance, whose son was on the bus the boy was trying to catch.

According to the Sheridan School District the bus was stopped, but was not making a pick up. It was at an intersection, waiting to turn onto Arch Street, which is where the boy’s normal stop is.

Saline County investigators say the boy thought he missed the bus, and ran into the road trying to catch it.

“The bus driver was trying to tell the kid, ‘stop, wait right there until I put the sign out,’ and the kid just come across the road, didn’t even look,” Vance added.

Neither the driver or the bus driver were faulted, with authorities calling this an accident.

“We are just so incredibly grateful that the boy is okay,” said Lauren Goins with the Sheridan School District. “The driver [car] from what I understand was very concerned for the child. From what I understand the driver was not speeding, the driver did not illegally pass the school bus.
