A beloved bakery returns to Des Moines neighborhood
celebration next year so it is more of a spring party. (áááSTACEYááá) People in a north Des Moines neighborhood -- are thrilled tonight because a ástaple of the Highland Park neighborhood, for more than 70 years -- is back-open. (ááá1-SHOTááá) (áááSTACEYááá) As KCCI's Max Diekneite explains, the return of the Hiland Bakery is good news for the historic Des Moines neighborhood. (áááPKGááá) The Highland Park Neighborhood -- has seen its fair share of struggles over the years Driving by -- it's hard to miss the empty storefronts. But this week... a much-welcomed sight... the return, of the beloved Hiland Bakery. <THE REACTION HAS BEEN INSANE!.> When the Hiland Bakery closed last summer -- Katelyn Adamson and her family, knew something had to be done. <I'M SEEING A LOT OF LOCAL BUSINESSES CLOSE DOWN, AND IT'S REALLY SAD TO SEE. IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE WANT TO PRESERVE - THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO MAKE OUR COMMUNITY THRIVE.> So the Adamson's did something -- that made a whole lot of people happy. They bought the bakery.. And -- even though it hasn't officially re-opened... customers, are already knocking- down the door. <WE'LL BE OPEN FROM NOW ON! MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY. 'GREAT, THANK YOU!'> <I'M JUST GLAD THEY'RE OPEN AGAIN!> Neighboring businesses -- are ecstatic. Brett Wheeler owns Wheeler's Auctions. <OH, IT'S HUGE. I'VE LIVED IN THIS NIEGHBORHOOD MY WHOLE LIFE. I'VE BEEN GOING TO THE BAKERY SINCE I WAS 13. Hiland Bakery has returned to the streets of the Highland Park neighborhood. "The reaction has been insane," said Katelyn Adamson, with Hiland Bakery. When the bakery closed last summer after 70 years of business, Adamson and her family knew something had to be done. "I'm seeing a lot of local businesses close down, and it's really sad to see," Adamson said. "It's something that we want to preserve, these local businesses that are supposed to make our community thrive." City Councilwoman Linda Westergaard, who represents the Highland Park neighborhood, said it's a big deal. "I think we've experienced what lots of communities have experienced. The difference is, we're coming back to life," Westergaard said. The bakery officially reopens at 5:30 a.m. Monday.
