The city of Des Moines will soon have a fleet of new electric cars.

The city of Des Moines will soon have a fleet of new electric cars.The City Council approved the purchase of four 2020 Nissan Leaf hatchbacks. They will be the city's first 100-percent electric vehicles.The cars will be used by the Community Development Department in the Neighborhood Inspections Division.Council members say, not only will they help save the planet, but they may also help save taxpayer money."We're taking the steps that we can as a city to be more sustainable and to make our community work for the long term. And we're doing it in a way that is going to be cost effective and, hopefully even save us money over the long term," said Ward Three Councilman Josh Mandelbaum.It doesn't stop there. The city says it may buy four more electric cars in early 2020.
