STORMS WILL TAKE WEEKS IN SOME AREAS. KCCI CREWS ARE OUT ACROSS CENTRAL IOWA CHECKING IN ON THE PROGRESS. RHEYA: FIRST LET’S GO TO KCCI SENIOR REPORTER TODD MAGEL NEAR 41ST AND COLLEGE IN DES MOINES. TODD? TODD: THE PEOPLE IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD GOT THEIR POWER BACK THIS AFTERNOON. SOME OUT OF THEIR HOMES AND CHEERED. ONE OF THE OAK TREES THAT FELL ON A POWER LINE BEHIND ME. THE STREET IS STILL HALF CLOSED OFF BECAUSE OF THE DAMAGE. AND AFTER DAYS IN THE DARK, THEY SAY THEY WILL NO LONGER TA ELECTRICITY FOR GRANTED. AARON WITT AND HIS NEIGHBORS CAN’T WATCH TV OR GET ON THE INTERNET, SO THEY’RE WATCHING THIS. CREWS FROM KANSAS SPENT THE DAY ON THEIR BLOCK NEAR 41ST AND COLLEGE WORKING TO RESTORE POWER. >> IT’S KIND OF ENTERTAINING, AND I HOPE TO NEVER SEE THIS AGAIN, SO WHY NOT WATCH IT. TODD INGER LAMB IS OUTSIDE : WATCHING TOO. THE STORM BLEW DOWN SEVERAL LARGE OAK TREES ON 41ST INCLUDING ONE IN HER FRONT YARD. THEY SNAPPED A POWER POLE AND POWER LINES. SHE’S BEEN WITHOUT ELECTRICITY SINCE MONDAY MORNING. >> WELL OBVIOUSLY I’VE GOT A FREEZER FULL OF FROZEN THINGS I HADN’T PLANNED TO THROUGH AWAY , SO LIKE EVERYBODY, YOU WANT YOUR ELECTRICITY, YOU WANT YOUR INTERNET. ALL THOSE THINGS WE’RE SO USED TO. TODD THE CREWS INSTALLED A NEW : POWER POLL AND RE ATTACHED THE DOWNED POWER LINES.IT TOOK ABOUT 4 HOURS AND THEN, LIKE A LITTLE MIRACLE THE POWER RETURNED RIGHT , AFTER LUNCH. >> WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO GET THE POWER ON? Des Moines neighborhood celebrates power returning
A Des Moines neighborhood was celebrating Wednesday when their power was restored after the derecho storm Monday. Aaron Witt and his neighbors couldn't watch TV or get on their internet so they watched crews from Kansas spend the day on their block near 41st Street and College Avenue working to restore power. "it's kind of entertaining," Witt said. "It's kind of like I hope to never see this again so why not go watch it?"Other neighbors gathered around with the same idea. The crews installed a new power poll and reattached the downed power lines. It took about four hours and then the power returned right after lunch.""What was it like to get the power on? I started to cry," said Dawn Martino, of Des Moines.
