THE END OF SLAVERY IN THE UNITED STATES. RIGHT NOW, TWO DES MOINES MEN FACE CHARGES IN CONNECTION TO A BRUTAL ASSAULT LAST MONTH. THIS AFTERNOON, 27-YEAR-OLD JESSE JAMES DOWNS TURNED HIMSELF INTO PLACE AND YESTERDAY POLICE ARRESTED 28-YEAR-OLD DALE LEE MILLARD. BOTH MEN ARE CHARGED WITH WILLFUL INJURY. KCCI’S MARCUS MCINTOSH IS LIVE AT THE DES MOINES POLICE OFFICE. -- DES MOINES POLICE DEPARTMENT. MARCUS: POLICE ANNOUNCED THE ARREST OF DOWNS AND LARGE. THE FATHER OF THE VICTIM SAYS HE IS HAPPY THAT THE MEN ACCUSED OF BEATING HIS SON WILL BE IN COURT. HIS 22-YEAR-OLD SON HAS BEEN RECOVERING SINCE HE WAS ATTACKED ON MAY 16. HE SPOKE BRIEFLY AT A PRESS CONFERENCE JUST DAYS AFTERWARD. >> WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE THIS BRUTAL. MARCUS: LEARNING ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE BRING THE FAMILY SOME RELIEF. >> HE IS KIND OF OVER IT. HE WANTS TO GET BACK TO HIM. THESE ARE THE STEPS, LIKE I SAID. TAKE THE WEIGHT OFF HIS SHOULDERS. MARCUS: DARRELL JONES IS THANKFUL THAT BOTH OF THEM AND ACCUSED OF BEATING HIS SON HAVE BEEN ARRESTED. EVIDENCE INCLUDED KNOCKING ON DOORS AND TALKING TO WITNESSES ON SCENE AND AN EXAMINATION OF THE MEDICAL RECORDS. WHILE ALL OF THAT TOOK MORE THAN A MONTH, DES MOINES POLICE WERE WELL AWARE OF BOTH MILLARD AND DOWNS. >> WE HAD IDENTIFIED BOTH OF THEM AS BEING IN THAT AREA AT THAT TIME. The Des Moines Police Department confirmed Friday a second man is in custody in connection with the assault of DarQuan Jones.Des Moines police said 27-year-old Jesse James Downs surrendered himself into police custody Friday at 1 p.m. Downs is charged with willful injury.Earlier in the day, Police announced the arrest of 28-year-old Dale Lee Millard, who is charged with willful injury causing serious injury. Police found Jones, a 22-year-old black man, with five broken bones in his face and a broken arm in the 5200 block of South Union Street. Jones reported to police that two white men beat him and that one called him racial slurs. "What we got here is justice,” said Daryl Jones, DarQuan Jones’ father. “Like I said, my son is getting better. He is smiling. He is back doing a little bit. He’s getting a little better. I am just proud of my city coming together"Police said no additional arrests are expected in the case.

The Des Moines Police Department confirmed Friday a second man is in custody in connection with the assault of DarQuan Jones.

Downs is charged with willful injury.

Earlier in the day, Police announced the arrest of 28-year-old Dale Lee Millard, who is charged with willful injury causing serious injury.

Police found Jones, a 22-year-old black man, with five broken bones in his face and a broken arm in the 5200 block of South Union Street.

Jones reported to police that two white men beat him and that one called him racial slurs.

"What we got here is justice,” said Daryl Jones, DarQuan Jones’ father. “Like I said, my son is getting better. He is smiling. He is back doing a little bit. He’s getting a little better. I am just proud of my city coming together"

Police said no additional arrests are expected in the case.
