Police share plan to beef up security in Des Moines skywalks
Des Moines police unveiled a new security plan Tuesday for the Des Moines Skywalk System following an assault Oct. 12. Authorities said a 21-year-old man and his girlfriend were walking in the skywalk when a group of teenagers attacked the man near the YMCA. Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek said authorities hope to place updated cameras in the skywalk. Parizek said the existing cameras did not provide adequate evidence in the Oct. 12 assault. "We want to get to a point where we've got some good HD video when there is a crime, so no matter how big or small, we've got good evidence to work with," Parizek said. Parizek said the Des Moines Police Department has added more officers and plans to take more of a management role in the skywalk's security contract. "Moving forward, we're gonna make sure that the security gets what they need to get that place safe," he said. Nick Ashton, who lives in downtown Des Moines, knows the 21-year-old assault victim and said he has had confrontations with the same group of teens in the past. "It's getting ridiculous," Ashton said. He said the Oct. 12 assault was the last straw and that he plans on moving out. "When that happened, I spoke with my landlord," Ashton said. "I said, 'This is enough. I'm not putting up with it.'" Parizek said Des Moines police have sat down with the school district, skywalk association and other community organizations to tackle the issue. "What we're really working on right now is getting perception back in line with what reality is – that the skywalks are safe," he said. Tom Conley, who provides security for the skywalk, said he welcomes additional support from the Des Moines Police Department. "The Des Moines police have been a fantastic partner," Conley said. "They know what needs to be done and how it needs (to be) done." Conley said that, while he has had disagreements with skywalk leaders over arming his officers in the past, everyone is dealing in good faith. After previously saying he may not bid for the role again, Conley said he has created a new skywalk security proposal that includes armed officers.
