School start dates delayed for some Iowa districts
Metro schools are delaying their start date this week for multiple reasons. Check back as this list is added to and adjusted.
The Ankeny Community School District said it will be delaying the start of school until Aug. 27.
This comes after the derecho caused power outages across the city. The district said buildings would remain open and the Before and After School Programs will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for registered students.

Bondurant-Farrar Community Schools announced Wednesday night it would be delaying the first day of school until Aug. 19 due to power outages from the derecho storm Monday.
"As many are aware, much of our district has been without electricity for the past two days. Our south campus buildings which include Morris, Anderson and the middle school still do not have power as of noon today," the school released in a statement. "Our high school does have electricity, however, currently no internet access. This will impact a number of things as we start the school year."
The school district said it will begin with students in Group B under their hybrid model.
Des Moines Public Schools told families Thursday that school will likely start on Sep. 8.
Power outages from Monday’s derecho postponed a school board meeting set for Thursday.
The Des Moines School Board will meet Monday to discuss starting online and vote on the official start date.
The Johnston Community School District, announced Thursday it will be delaying the start of school until the week of Aug. 31, due to the storm this week.
"While we did not lose power or sustain any damage to our technology facilities, our primary Internet connection was lost in the storm," the district wrote in a statement. "The storm damage caused major power outages and utility damage thus taking our primary Internet connection down. Our primary Internet provider services are down throughout the Midwest, impacting their clients far beyond Johnston Schools. They have assured us they are working on restoring power and utility facilities as fast as they can but cannot provide an estimated time for it to be restored."
Their start of school will be under a hybrid schedule with the Purple Group attending Monday, Tuesday and dismissing three hours early on Wednesday. The Gold group will be attending school on Thursday and Friday.
They also warn that as of Thursday the software that creates the calendar on the website is down.
The Marshalltown Community School District announced Friday it would be delaying it's start date until Sept. 8 due to power outage conflicts.
The Superintendent Theron Schutte said, "As if the July 2018 Tornado recovery and COVID-19 challenges weren’t enough, now we have the August 2020 Derecho aftermath to contend with. Marshalltown Strong just became Marshalltown Stronger! I’m confident we will continue to help each other persevere through yet another traumatic event."
Schutte went on to say that reportedly only 25% of the community has internet and/or power as of Aug. 14.
The Waukee Community School District said Thursday that in-person classes will begin on Aug. 25, while online classes begin Aug. 31.
Start dates were delayed as the district waits for online equipment to arrive.
The Van Meter School District announced it will be delaying the start of school Friday because of COVID-19.
The Van Meter Superintendent Deron Durflinger said there was a positive COVID-19 case at Kids Care at the Methodist Church. Durflinger said the daycare found it difficult to know which students had close contact with the child with the positive case, so they quarantined all students.
The first day of school has now been set for Aug. 24.
