THE FAIR WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR. BUT, FOR MANY LOYAL FAIRGOERS -- 2020 WILL ALWAYS BE THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY. <THIS IS JUST ANOTHER DEAL TO PUT A CLOUD OVER YOU, AND, IT KIND OF SINKS YOUR HEART.> CEO OF CATCH DES MOINES GREG EDWARDS SAYS -- IT'S ALSO A HUGE ECONOMIC LOSS... Des Moines metro takes financial hit with Iowa State Fair canceled
Iowans woke up to a bittersweet Thursday on what would have marked the first day of the Iowa State Fair.The Iowa State Fair Board voted to postpone the fair until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Iowa State Fair CEO Gary Slater said organizers are getting creative to bring pieces of the fair back, including junior livestock shows spread out over multiple weekends."I know that Iowans are missing the Iowa State Fair,” Slater said. “A lot of people are sad because this is their annual family vacation, and some of the things that they normally do are on hold. But we are here, and we are planning for the fair next year. We'd like your support."While may fair traditions are on hold until next year, Iowans can still recreate some beloved fair fun.Beginning Thursday, KCCI’s “Flavor of the Fair” will feature fair-themed activities and stories for Iowans to join in at home.For day one, KCCI asks Iowans to make their very best DIY Butter Cow. Details can be found here.Iowans can also visit the Iowa State Fair website or Facebook page for videos, competitions, facts and games.Slater said the Iowa State Fair will come back bigger and better in 2021.
