Protesters said that under Pence’s leadership, almost 1,000 Iowans have died of COVID-19. Headstones and wooden crosses were placed on East 30th Street to represent Iowans killed during the pandemic.
During the "Farmers & Ranchers for Trump" event, Pence addressed derecho damage in Iowa before turning to updates on President Donald Trump's re-election campaign.
The vice president said he was "taken aback to hear the magnitude of this storm and this impact."
Pence said he met with families who lost crops during the storm.
After speaking at the fairgrounds, the vice president traveled to Living History Farms in Urbandale to launch the "Fight for America” campaign.
Pence then heads to the Iowa GOP's Stars and Stripes Summer Dinner in West Des Moines before heading back to Washington.
Gov. Kim Reynolds said Tuesday that she believes Dr. Deborah Birx will travel with the vice president.
