Cleanup underway for Sacramento businesses after second night of looting
GOOD MORNING. BRIAN: GOOD MORNING. THE CLEANUP IS WELL UNDERWAY. ELIAS IS THE OWNER OF TONY’S DELICATESSEN AND HE IS SECURING WHAT IS LEFT OF THE CASH REGISTER. RIGHT NEXT DOOR A BRIDAL SHOP THAT WAS BROKEN INTO IS DAMAGED AS WELL. MANY BUSINESSES ALONG THE STREET ARE DAMAGED. THERE IS GRAFFITI AND WE CANNOT SHOW YOU THAT BECAUSE OF THE LANGUAGE USED. THIS IS THE BRIDAL SHOP NEXT DOOR. MICHAEL SUMMERFIELD IS ONE OF THE OWNERS AND WE ARE LIVE RIGHT NOW. HOW MUCH HAVE YOU LOST HERE? >> WE LOST A LOT. FORTUNATELY, MOST OF IT WAS OUR STOCK. WE HAVE NOT ASSESSED THAT YET. WE BELIEVE IT IS. BRIAN: SOME OF IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CUSTOMERS’ DRESSES? >> SOME, BUT I DON’T THINK BY THE COLOR OF THE BAG THEY WERE TAKING THOSE. BRIAN: YOU SAW THIS ON THE CAMERA. WHAT DID YOU SEE? >> EVERYTHING. I STARTED BEING HERE AND MOVED OUT WHEN I REALIZED THERE WAS NO CHANCE THAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. BRIAN: YOUR STORES CLEANED OUT. >> WE MOVED A LOT OF IT PRIOR TO THE EVENING, BUT A LOT OF IT IS CLEANED OUT. BRIAN: THE CLEANUP CONTINUING. MICHAEL, I AM SO SORRY TO SEE YOUR BUSINESS. IT IS THIS WAY ALL THE WAY DOWN J STREET. YOU CAN SEE BROKEN GLASS AND THE GRAFFITI. THIS WAS THE SCENE LAST NIGHT AS ALL THIS WAS HAPPENING. IT WAS CHAOS AS POLICE WERE TRYING TO MOVE PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT SECTORS OF THE CITY. MICHAEL DESCRIBED IT AS A WAVE OF PEOPLE THAT CAME THROUGH AND STARTED BREAKING EVERY WINDOW THEY COULD GET THEIR HANDS ON. THE DELICATESSEN WAS LOOTED, THERE WAS A BEVMO DOWN THE STREET LOOTED, AND POLICE ARRIVED IN A PICKUP TRUCK. THEY DISPERSED THE CROWD. PEOPLE WERE RUNNING WITH BOTTLES IN HANDS AND LEAVING THAT BUSINESS. TALKING WITH ELIAS AT TONY’S DELICATESSEN HE CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY. EVERYONE HERE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED IN MINNEAPOLIS WAS WRONG, BUT ALSO WONDERING WHY THEY HAVE BEEN TARGETED IN THIS PROTEST. >> I HAVE BEEN HERE 29 YEARS GOING ON 30 YEARS. MY LIFE IS HERE. WHAT CAN I SAY? BRIAN: I AM SORRY. >> THIS IS UNCALLED FOR. THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO DO THINGS. BRIAN: THEY CONTINUE THAT WORK AND HERE AT TONY’S DELICATESSEN THEY HAVE BEEN CLOSED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. THEY WERE SHUT DOWN 55 DAYS AND ALREADY REELING FROM THAT, NOT ABLE TO MAKE RENT, AND JUST GETTING REOPENED. NOW THIS. WE ARE TOLD THE SAFE WAS STOLEN, A LOT OF THE EQUIPMENT WAS STOLEN, AND ALL OF THE CASES RIPPED OPEN AND THE FOOD DESTROYED. THIS IS GOING TO BE A LONG ROAD OF RECOVERY FOR THIS

Tony’s Delicatessen was one of the businesses damaged by protests Sunday night. “I've been here 29 years, going on 30 years. My life is here. What can I say? This is not good, this is not the way to do things,” said Elias Silhi, owner of Tony’s Delicatessen. Several of the businesses were already hurting from the lost business during the coronavirus pandemic, and face an already long road of recovery. Get the full story in the video above.
