Two men are in custody after authorities opened fire on one of the men Thursday morning while serving a search warrant in Rancho Cordova, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said.
The man was shot around 6:30 a.m. at a home on Palm Grove Drive near Highway 50, Sgt. Tess Deterding said.
The shooting happened while U.S. marshals were assisting Drug Enforcement Administration agents serve a federal warrant, a DEA spokesperson told KCRA 3.
The U.S. Marshals Service conducted a knock-and-notice and entered the home. They were then confronted by a man, who was pointing a handgun at officers, Deterding said.
The marshals opened fire at the man, who was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, Deterding said. He was shot in the hand, according to a DEA spokesperson.
"I heard some gunshots," said Barbara Lee, who lives nearby. "Bang. Bang. Twice. Two times and I came flying out here with my friend."
The other man in the home was also taken into custody, according to Deterding. It's not clear which man was the target of the search warrant.
Multiple firearms were found in the home, officials said.
A spokesperson for the DEA could not elaborate on why one of the men in the home was the focus of the warrant, who they are or how long authorities have been conducting their investigation.
The suspects are expected in federal court Friday, the spokesperson said.
Initially, the sheriff’s office said a DEA agent shot the man. The office has since clarified to say U.S. Marshals Service personnel shot him.
