Sacramento vegan baker sees opportunity in marijuana edibles
A longtime Sacramento vegan baker is cooking up something new -- marijuana edibles.
Rey Ortega has been busy lately making marijuana-infused candy and cookies at his new manufacturing facility. He said edibles in the Golden State are so hot right now that he's expecting to make millions in just his first year in business.
His new facility in Sacramento is called Ms. Greenfields Edibles.
There, KCRA saw Ortega's head baker making hard candy. Some candy coins will have THC for recreational cannabis users, and another batch of candy will have CBD, a substance many medical marijuana users look for in edibles.
Ortega said he's anxious to get one more permit from the city to start getting his product out to the masses.
"This experience has (been) actually quite larger than I thought it was going to be. I've got a lot of people banging at my door to want this product, both Southern and Northern California. I'm just waiting for the right moments and the right people to get in line to be able to distribute to each of the dispensaries, which there is about 400 in California right now," Ortega said.
Lisa Clamp said she is grateful for the opportunity to be the heady candy maker for Ms. Greenfields Edibles. Clamp is a wildfire victim from Paradise who lost her house and bakery business last month.
Clamp relocated this month to Sacramento.
"Just what I have seen first-hand ... It's a miracle, so the fact that it is able to become legal and be more accessible to the community is amazing. It's been held back for a lot of years. It's an herb, it's an herb from God," Clamp said.
Ortega hopes to be able to sell his edibles in the next week or two.
As for the enormous profits the company is expected to make, Ortega said he plans to support a number of charities in Sacramento.
