Fire at Sacramento auto repair yard creates large plume of smoke
BREAKING NEWS. LISA: BREAKING NEWS OUT OF SACRAMENTO OR FIREFIGHTERS ON THE SCENE OF A FIRE AT A REPAIR YARD. BRIAN: THIS IS ON EL CAMINO AVENUE EAST OF ARDEN WAY. MAX RESNIK JUST GOT TO THE SCENE. WHAT ARE YOU SEEING NOW? MAX: GOOD AFTERNOON, THIS IS A MODERN CLASSIC AUTOMOTIVE. FIREFIGHTERS ARE IN MOP UP LOAD PUTTING WATER DOWN ON A COUPLE OF RVS, AS WELL AS A COUPLE OF VEHICLES THAT CAUGHT FIRE A SHORT TIME AGO. I WANT TO BRING IN THE BATTALION CHIEF WHO HAS BEEN COORDINATING THIS. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT WHEN THE FIRE BROKE OUT AND WHAT IT INVOLVED? >> WE ARE STILL IN INVESTIGATION OF WHY THE FIRE BROKE OUT, BUT ONE OF THE RVS DID CATCH FIRE. THE WIND BUILT UP FAIRLY QUICKLY AND MOVED INTO THE NEXT IV AND LOOKED INTO FOUR CARS PARKED ALONGSIDE OF IT. OUR GOAL WAS TO KEEP THE FIRE CONTAINED DUE TO THE HEAVY SHUTTERS WE HAVE ON ONE SIDE. WE HAD NO ADDITIONAL THREATS TO THOSE AREAS SO WE WERE ABLE TO KEEP IT CONTAINED TO THE PARKING LOT WHERE THE RVS WERE AT. MAX: OBVIOUSLY A LOT OF COMBUSTIBLE WENT TO REELS, WHAT ARE THE CONCERNS ON SCENE? >> THE HUMAN WASTE INSIDE THE RV. THE PROPANE TAKES, WE DON’T KNOW WHAT LEVEL SERVICE THE RVS ARE IN THEMSELVES, OR THE FUEL LEVELS. A LOT OF DIFFERENT AREAS FOR US TO WORRY ABOUT. ONE OF THE PROPANE TANKS DID VENT OFF. IT MINUTE IT LIKE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO. IT DID HAVE A SCARY MOMENT AS WE HAD 20 FOOT FLAMES SHOOT OUT FOR A FEW SECONDS. ASK: WHAT WAS IT LIKE FOR FIREFIGHTERS HERE ON THE GROUND >> IT CATCHES YOU BY SURPRISE. FORTUNATELY IT WAS NOT THERE AND THEY WERE ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY START COOLING THE PROPANE TANK DOWN AND KEEP IT LOW ENOUGH TO WHERE DID NOT EXPLODE, BUT DID THE PROPER PROCESS OF LETTING ITSELF IN A LATE ON THE PROPANE. MAX: DESCRIBE WHAT THIS HAS BEEN MIKE FOR SACRAMENTO FIREFIGHTERS. THE TWO-STORY BUILDING HAD A BIG FAR AS WELL. >> TODAY HAS BEEN A VERY BUSY DAY FOR THE SACRAMENTO FIRE DEPARTMENT. THIS IS OUR THIRD WORKING FIRE. WE HAD A MAJOR FIRE THAT TOOK ABOUT A THIRD OF OUR RESOURCES IN THE CITY AND WE HAVE HAD SMALL INDIVIDUAL FIRE SUCH AS THIS ONE AND A SMALL STRUCTURE FIRE. IT HAS BEEN A BUSY AND HOT THEY AND THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE ALL THE OTHER CALLS WE HAVE GOT IN. WE ARE WORKING HARD TODAY. MAX: IN ARSON INVESTIGATOR WILL BE OUT LOOKING INTO THIS. ASK WE ARE JUST WAITING FOR HIM TO SHOW UP ON SCENE.
