Sacramento woman captures racial slur on home surveillance

Police locate person of interest in hate crime investigation

Sacramento police are conducting a hate crime investigation into a Memorial Day incident captured on camera. Video shows a woman spitting on the front door, throwing a package and using a racial slur toward Black people before driving away in a vehicle. The woman inside the home, who is Black, caught the incident on surveillance. She wants to remain anonymous but shared the video with KCRA 3, which shows her exercising in front of her home. She explains she noticed another woman next door before going inside and said they didn’t talk or interact. “I started working out and I remember thinking, ‘Oh, our neighbor has a daughter.’ Literally that was it.” The video shows the woman running up to the front door and spitting on it twice. She then returns and throws a package at the door and says a racial slur before driving away. “I’m always the type of person like ‘don’t go there, don’t go there.’ And then when we come back home from our neighbor’s house to see what happened, I look further into the video after she throws the bag and I hear her say that (slur). That’s when all the emotions took over. At first, it was like confusion, like what happened? What did I do? And then just to know it was just because of my skin color.” The victim said the package was an open bag of noodles. According to an Airbnb spokesperson, the person of interest was renting a room next door. “What we witnessed in this video is unconscionable," the Airbnb spokesperson said in a statement. "We have zero tolerance for this behavior and maintain a strict nondiscrimination policy. As soon as we saw the video, we instituted a lifetime ban against this guest."The victim adds the homeowner of the rental also apologized for the incident.“I don’t hate the girl, I’m not mad at her. I just feel like people who behave that way should be dealing with the consequences so that people think twice before doing something like that," the victim said. Police said they located the person of interest and are finishing their investigation. It ultimately will be up to the district attorney's office to file charges.
