Sacramento officially joins MLS
Sacramento Republic FC officially joined Major League Soccer on Monday.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber came to town to welcome Sacramento as the 29th team to join the league.
The official announcement got underway around 11:30 a.m. at The Bank in downtown Sacramento. Mayor Darrell Steinberg, Gov. Gavin Newsom and investors Ron Burkle, Matt Alvarez and Kevin Nagle attended the event.
"It's the perfect city for our growing league," Garber told a crowd of cheering soccer fans.
Sacramento now has one of four MLS teams in California. Play is set to begin in 2022.
Steinberg acknowledged that it's been a long road to the big leagues for Sacramento's soccer club.
"There were at least a half dozen times when it seemed evident that this day was just not going to happen," Steinberg said. "Many people counted us out, for this was a complex, high-stakes deal from the start that tested the resilience, the fortitude and the optimism of everyone involved, especially our fans and our community."
The MLS festivities began at 6 a.m. at Solomon’s Delicatessen, where the K Street restaurant featured a soccer-themed menu and had the MLS cup on display.
Sacramento Republic FC then hosted a block party Monday evening at Fourth Street and Capitol Mall. The event, which was free and open to the public, featured family-friendly fun and games, a beer garden, food trucks and giveaways.
