Couple opens gelato shop in East Sacramento
A husband and wife have opened a new gelato shop in East Sacramento, serving up classic flavors and some less-common combinations.Yume Gelato, located at 5921 Folsom Blvd., is Mike Janwar and Lucy Xu's first food venture.Janwar said that although "ice cream is great," Sacramento was in need of more gelato options. He and his wife also wanted to put their twist on things."With my background, being Asian, I like to mix and match flavor-wise. So, hopefully, I can infuse a little bit of different elements from my background and, you know, bring them to the community," said Janwar, referencing their pineapple and basil gelato as an example.Patrons will also find classic gelato flavors, from mint chocolate to pistachio to peanut butter chocolate.Expect the pair, however, to experiment with new flavor combinations. Janwar says he and his wife love trying new foods and experiencing new flavor profiles."We always want to try and try to translate that into dessert because we love dessert and gelato is our favorite," Janwar said.All of the gelato is made in-house. Coffee and tea are also sold. Although this is the couple's first food venture, Yume Gelato has been years in the making.An Italian chef taught them how to make the dessert. Then, they tested their recipes at home for over a year while looking for a storefront, before settling on their East Sacramento spot.Yume Gelato had its soft opening Sunday. Their grand opening is set for Tuesday, Aug. 25. They will be open Sunday and Tuesday-Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from noon to 9 p.m.
