A slow-moving winter storm system will bring accumulating snowfall to all of this weekend. This comes as Eastern Iowa continues to clean up following a storm earlier this week that dumped more than 7 inches of snow.

TIMING

KCRG-TV9 First Alert Storm Team Meteorologist Joe Winters said this weekend’s system will be longer in duration than recent storms.

“The snow will begin late Saturday night and overspread the area as the night progresses,” Winters said. “The snow will continue to fall through much of the day Sunday and comes to an end Sunday night when the system moves out of our area.”

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect Saturday night and Sunday.

IMPACTS

Winters added winds associated with the system will be light and that will limit the risk of blowing and drifting snow.

“Even with light winds, this system will create travel headaches. Once the snow starts to fall Saturday night, roads will quickly become snow covered and visibility will be reduced,” Winters said.

SNOWFALL FORECAST

“Our current forecast has our area getting about three to five inches of snow once the storm comes to an end,” Winters said. “Locally heavier amounts are possible."

EXTENDED FORECAST

Following Sunday’s storm, Winters said temperatures will remain below normal through the work week with another chance of a storm entering the forecast Wednesday.
