A longtime bus driver for the Harrisburg School District is turning in his keys and retiring this year.
George VanDenHul is calling it quits after more than 50 years driving bus in Harrisburg. When he started, the town had one school building and about 300 residents. On top of getting kids to school all these years, George helped Harrisburg build a baseball field and even served as the local fire chief. When he started with the district back in 1966, he was one of five bus drivers.
“Five. We’ve got 23 now. It’s quite a change. We had one school and now we’ve got nine with two more to go. Two more coming up,” VanDenHul said.
The community of Harrisburg is hosting a special day to honor George’s service on February 28th.
