A man was taken to hospital after being stabbed in Tunbridge Wells town centre.

The victim, in his 50s, was taken to a London hospital where his condition is described by police as "serious but stable".

Calverley Road and adjoining roads were closed off by a police cordon last night (August 21) after the "serious assault" at around 7pm.

A police spokesman said: "An investigation into the incident has been launched including forensic analysis of the crime scene and examination of CCTV in the area."

At least three people gave statements to officers about what they had seen.

An ambulance crew dealt with the victim who was on the ground near the former White Stuff store at the top of Calverley Road precinct.

One member of the public, Loic Beuzit, made a 999 call.

He said: "There were about six police officers when I was there and a dozen bystanders, some of whom were providing first aid and helping to keep him comfortable."

Mr Beuzit said he wasn't shocked by the incident as the town was going "downhill".

"I grew up here, lived in Oz 2004-15 and it's much worse than when I left," he said.
