These pictures show the effect of downpours at the car park at Morrisons in Canterbury.

Customers at the supermarket saw the car park in Wincheap turn into a shallow swimming pool earlier today (June 10) as enormous amounts of rain throughout the morning flooded much of it.

Any shoppers who left their wellies at home and decided to pick up their groceries in flip flops may well have regretted their decision and those driving 4x4s found their vehicle came in handy as they navigated the miniature Atlantis.

The Met Office has issued Kent with an amber weather warning, saying it is likely that some homes and businesses will be flooded and that power cuts and there will be a loss of services.

Originally only a yellow weather warning had been issued but this was later upgraded.

Forecasters have predicted the area will experience more than a month’s worth of rainfall today, with showers expected to last until 11pm.

Simon Partridge, forecaster for the Met Office, told Mirror Online: "We will get heavy bursts. We possibly could get 2.5 inches (60mm) in the southeast on higher ground.

"There's potential for that to fall as it will be a very wet day for the southeast. It'll be unseasonably wet.

"The average rainfall for June is 52mm (2.04 inches) in the southeast.”
