A popular Tunbridge Wells spa and health club has closed down.

The Royale Retreat Spa on Vale Road shut its doors for the final time yesterday (May 12).

It offered a heated swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, treatment rooms, gym and studio.

An email was sent out to members by manager Maryna Cole a day before the closure.

'We have made this decision with a very heavy heart'

It read: "It is with sadness that we announce that the Tunbridge Wells Royale Retreat Spa and Membership club will be closing and our last day will be (May 12).

The spa is located on Vale Road

"We have made this decision with a very heavy heart and sadly feel that it is best for the spa staff to organise the refunds to all the members outside the spa opening hours.

"The aim is to make sure we have enough time for all and that everyone is happy and do not feel that they have been let down with refund payments.

"The spa reception emails will be opened until the 18th May 2019 to make sure that we have enough time to have your updated email address, home addresses in order to send you the cheques after the 20th May 2019 to reimburse any outstanding memberships fees.

Kent Live understands the site's long leasehold was sold at auction back on February 14 with a guide price of £650,000.

The property was granted planning permission on November 28, 2018 to partially convert the spa into residential units, according to the listing.

The lease allows for the conversion of the ground floor to one flat, with the landlord’s consent required for two.
