Serious crash closes part of A2 near Canterbury

Part of the A2 has reopened after several hours following a multi-vehicle accident and a burst water main.

Traffic on the London-bound carriageway was being diverted after the incident from the A2050 for Bridge and the A28 Thanington Road.

Motorists were told to exit on the A2050 into Canterbury and then left onto the A28 to rejoin back on the A2.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene at about 5am today, and treated two people for injuries. Neither needed hospital treatment.

Another section of the A2 was closed for more than six hours after a man in his 20s was hit by a car overnight and later died.

Police shut the coastbound carriageway between the M2 junction 7 for Brenley Corner and the A28 Thanington Road near Canterbury at 12.30am.

The route was reopened shortly after 7am.

Accident investigation work is said to have been completed at around 6am.

Anyone travelling to the Port of Dover was told to use the M20 instead.
