Canterbury rat-run to be shut for more than a week due to damage caused by burst water main in Broad Oak

A busy rat-run in and out of Canterbury will remain shut for more than a week while road repairs are carried out following a burst water pipe.

Shalloak Road, used by motorists wanting to avoid the Sturry level crossing, was closed today (March 8) while technicians from South East Water fixed a burst on a large water main in Broad Oak.

South East Water says the burst caused extensive damage to the highway which will take time to fix and the road will re-open on Monday, March 18.

While the closure is in place, motorists are being diverted along Sturry Hill (A291), Sturry Road (A28) and Vauxhall Road and vice versa.

Following the burst, 29 customers called the water company to report the loss of drinking water supplies and work was undertaken to restore supplies.

Repairs to the pipe are due to be completed this evening.

Jenny Rhodes, South East Water’s regional network manager, said: “I’m very sorry for the ongoing disruption caused to motorists and the community as a result of this burst.

“The safety of the public and our staff is our top priority and as the damage to the road is far more extensive than originally thought it will take time to repair.

“We are aware this emergency closure will be disruptive to the local community, but our contractor is working as quickly and safely as possible to fix and reopen the road as soon as possible."
