Part of Canterbury city centre was sealed off by police amid reports a World War Two hand grenade had been found under a bridge.
Officers were called to The Friars, near Marlowe Theatre, at around 6pm.
A police spokesman said: "Officers and a Ministry of Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended and a temporary cordon was put in place.
"The item has now been removed by the EOD team and the cordon lifted."
