Maidstone United head coach Hakan Hayrettin hails supporters after Kent Senior Cup win against Gillingham

Hakan Hayrettin couldn't believe the atmosphere in Maidstone's Kent Senior Cup semi-final victory over Gillingham.

United beat their old rivals for the second season running, winning 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, to set up a final at Bromley.

The tie attracted a crowd of just under 1,400 but it felt like a lot more with both sets of fans going for it in the Genco Stand.

Stones head coach Hayrettin said: "A Kent derby’s a new experience for me but I’m just so pleased. The support was amazing.

"It’s like being in a hostile game in Turkey with 30,000 people. It’s amazing.

"The noise they make, the support they give this team, I just can’t believe how good it is. It’s unbelievable. I'm so glad I'm here."

Maidstone twice fought back from a goal down to force a penalty shoot-out, with Blair Turgott converting the winning kick.

The Stones were up against a strong Gills line-up including Elliott List, whose goal knocked Premier League Cardiff out of the FA Cup two months ago.

Hayrettin said: "It was an even game. We acquitted ourselves well. We gave away two sloppy goals and we had to work hard to get back in the game, which we did, and then it’s a lottery when it goes to penalties.

"We won on penalties and I’m just so happy for the club and the supporters, especially for the supporters.

"We need to put a smile on people’s faces and a win will do that.

"There were two very good teams out there and we won against a Football League club with lots of experience in their squad."
