Bismarck police respond to hostage situation, one arrested, no one harmed

The Bismarck Police Department says they arrested a man after a hostage situation Thursday night.

Lt. Luke Gardiner with BPD says 44-year-old Shane Dockter is accused of going to a home on Sweet Ave. and breaking into a home with an AR-15.

Police say 11 people were inside the home including children. Dockter is accused of knocking on the door earlier in the evening and being asked to leave, so he did. Officers say Dockter came back 20 minutes later and the people inside opened the door thinking it was someone else.

Police responded around 11:45 p.m. to the hostage situation. Gardiner says the report doesn’t specify who called 911.

Officers set up a perimeter around the home. A door to the home was opened and police could see Dockter with a woman, then the door closed. Gardiner says about three minutes later the door opened again and a man escorted Dockter out without the AR-15.

Docketer was arrested around 12:44 a.m. Friday.

Gardiner says during the 20-minute window Dockter was away from the home, he’s accused of shooting through a window of a home on the 4300 block of Patriot Drive. Authorities say he knew the people in this home, too.

No one was injured.

Dockter was arrested and is being held for terrorizing, felonious restraint, possession of a firearm by convicted felon and burglary at night.

No charges have been posted yet.

Bismarck police say they believe family and friends of Dockter's might be storing more firearms. Anyone with information about any firearms that belong to Shane Dockter is asked to call 701-223-1212.
