Bismarck Public Works Department has distributed over one million pounds of sand for the streets just this winter.

It's been a fight against the winter elements cleaning streets.

Keith Glass the superintendent of roads and streets said, “The sand is mixed with salt water brine to help fight the ice and snow. It is not just the amount of snow on the ground that is the challenge, but the below freezing temperatures and high winds. Like I said, this year is kind of extreme with these cold temperatures. We've been hauling out quite a lot of material for traction on the streets.”

Glass said they expect to have large amounts of sand cleanup come spring, considering they have put down nearly twice as much on the roads compared to previous years.
