A new agency was formed for the state of North Dakota.

The Department of Environmental Quality is up and running in Bismarck.

This doesn't mean that the work wasn't being done. Most of the divisions of the department already existed but have now combined into a new agency. The 2017 legislative session created it, but it wasn't official until April 29.

"Environmental protection has evolved over the years. With energy development in the state, big agricultural developments, environmental issues were just being elevated, and they needed to have their own platform to be able to address all of the complex issues in the environment that are ongoing today," said Dave Glatt, Department of Environmental Quality director.

It includes air and water quality, and waste management.
